The top 44 “Up and Coming” standup comedians from around the US, Canada and England were invited to perform and showcase their talents at the second annual Detroit International Comedy Festival which took place March 16-21, 2009 at the legendary Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle. The producers of the festival contacted Detroit filmmaker Jim Dudek (P.I. Blues, Star Movie Show, Fox Kids Show) to make a movie about the festival. The result is a funny captivating performance and documentary mixed style independent film.
The movie was shot over the six days with 5 cameras. You’ll get to see what the festival was all about, not only for the audience, but also for the comedians. Performances from the Best of the Best comics will have moviegoers rolling in aisles. Detroit’s troubles become comic fodder. Nothing relaxes and frees the spirit like laughter. Detroit’s ills seem curable and not so bad when put in the comic’s point of view. Most comedians have overcome hardships in their own life and their comical messages are very uplifting and really instill hope.
The festival starred, Ryan Hamilton, seen on Comedy Central and featured on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”. Ryan is also a member of the “Cleans Guys Of Comedy” tour. Rolling Stone magazine named Hamilton one of the top “Five Comics To Watch”. You’ll see a hilarious performance from Tim Nutt who was named “Best of the Fest” at the world’s top comedy festival, Montreal’s “Just For Laughs”. Tim also won the Canadian Comedy Award for “Best Live TV Performance”. Stand-Up Comedienne Alycia Cooper is based in Washington D.C. and was formally from LA, where she wrote the "Top 10's" for the #1 radio show in LA, "The Steve Harvey Morning Show”. Alycia has performed on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”, BET’s “Live” and “Comicview”. She recently received the holy grail of comedy, a development deal with Disney.
You’ll be astounded by Brett Eastburn who was born with NO arms and NO legs but with a HUGE funny bone. He is a full time inspirational speaker and comedian. Brett lives near South Bend IN and has traveled the world from Asia to Europe assuring us he has NO handicaps. He is the subject of an upcoming documentary film and book. He also has a Showtime Comedy Special and an Inspirational National TV Show in development. Brandon Vestal is quickly establishing himself as one of best young comic talents in the country. Originally from Oklahoma, he now lives in LA and is a regular in “tinsel town” comedy clubs. He’s been on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and won “Best of the West” in the Detroit Fest. The essence of a new Detroit is represented in comedian and impressionist Mike McDaniel. His impressions range from Dave Chappelle to Barack Obama. Michael has over 1.5 million views on You Tube without ever being featured. Born and raised in Detroit, Michael knows the town and how to make it laugh. He earned the “Best of Detroit” Award.
There’s much more in this film from the Best of the Best stand-up comics, onstage, backstage, offstage. See it, laugh, feel good.
Executive Producer Mark Ridley
Mark Ridley started his Comedy Castle thirty years ago in the basement of a restaurant in January 1979; Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle hit it off right away. With open mike talent like Tim Allen and Dave Coulier, all 90 seats were filled most of the time. As the demand grew Ridley moved the Comedy Castle to several larger venues to meet those demands until its present location, which opened in January 1990. Throughout the years, comedians on the rise have played the stage of the Comedy Castle. Tim Allen, Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O’Donnell, Jim Carrey, Drew Carey, Garry Shandling, Bobcat Goldthwait, and Jay Leno are just a few of the established comedians who have performed there since 1979. Ridley is credited with starting the three comedian show format, which has become the industry standard. Mark is an Emmy Award winning television producer for a program he produced and hosted in 1992 starring Tim Allen.
Ridley’s influence on the local Detroit entertainment scene cannot be overlooked. His national connections enable Ridley to help manage and promote local comedians. Many of them have gone on to perform on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and Comedy Central. Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle has hosted the Showtime Comedy Club Network, HBO’s Comic Relief, A&E’s Comedy On The Road with John Byner, and the Comcast Comedy Spotlight. Ridley produces “Laugh-A-Palooza” each year at the Meadowbrook Theater. This gives rising Detroit talent an opportunity to show off their comedy skills in front of a larger theater crowd. Mark is now producing the annual “Detroit International Comedy Festival” which brings established national comic stars and the best “up and coming” talent to the Detroit area for a week of laughs. The 2010 festival is March 21-27 and stars Lewis Black. The Comedy Castle is consistently rated in the top 10 comedy clubs across America and as high as #2 in some poles.
Executive Producer Dave Moroz
David Moroz created Aspen Talent after spending 20 years in Student Affairs positions in colleges and universities across the country. He held positions in residence life and student activities at Oakland University (Michigan), The University of California, Davis, The University of Oregon and The Center for Creative Studies, College of Art and Design (Detroit).
Many of the artists on the Aspen Talent roster were regular performers at Oakland University where David created the “Friday Night Live” entertainment series. All are either well established in the entertainment business or are creating a buzz everywhere that they perform. Comedians being booked by Dave include Dave Coulier, Kivi Rogers, Ryan Hamilton, Emmy winning comedian Michael Kosta and more.
